This Blessed Life

The eyes have it

Much as it is convenient to tweet and update FB status, there’s no archiving of them, is there? I must note to post more, to jot down memories of my son who is continuing to develop and amaze us everyday.

Recently, he has some eye-infection (which actually doesn’t really bother him much,he’s still active as ever) and the Doc’s recommendation was to put eye-drops and some ointment for him. Well, if there’s a struggle getting him to take meds, I cannot imagine administering eye drops and ointment!

BUT, he was such a brave little boy when the nurse administered both for him. No fuss, no struggling, no crying. In fact, when tehpeng scooped him up after, he immediately went “Buy Toy”, nonchalantly. Which got us chuckling and of course, he did get to choose a toy after.

Of course, back home, it was a different story. There were struggles. There were bribes and even bargains. When he asked for my iphone, I will barter-trade that he will let mummy put eye drops. He will think for a bit before saying yes. But so far, he’s been good. We managed to administer without much force needed.

I must say, he’s very brave. I don’t think I have ever succeeded in putting the ointment into my own eye (I tend to just dab it at the outside of the eyel id). Yes, unfortunately, he seems to have inherited my ability to get eye infection. Sigh.

And this morning, he even told us, “No eye drops, just rub rub”. 6 words, 1 sentence! Amazing. By rub rub, he means the hot compress which I will do for him every night which will help to reduce the infection.

Well, that’s just about the steps for dinner tonight.

I cheated with the readymade pasta bake sauce and added some pumpkin bits (we always have some root vegetables in the fridge, for Nat) as well as added a dash of steak sauce to the sizzling ground beef.

It wasn’t too bad, maybe just abit more cheese the next time.

But after finishing, I felt the heat rise up within me. My Chinese body cannot take too much ang-moh food? Gimme my soup!

  • Buying focus

I happened to be in Centrepoint for lunch with Dada and it’s also Robinson’s sale.

Thought I’ll accompany her to take a look.

I walked past the beauty brand counters and headed straight to toiletries. Bought Nat’s toothpaste  (it was out of stock at NTUC & Kiddypalace!) and medical plasters for myself.

    Can anyone spell a-u-n-t-i-e?

  • Bump, not

Funny how people say I don’t look pregger when I actually am (or was) and think I am when I’m really really not!

First, I was asked what’s my craving for lunch today.

    It must be the dress.

Then after dinner, my dress felt tight and I was joking to all that I look as if I’m pregger. My dad agreed with me! And tehpengtold me that parrot asked him discreetly too!

I weighed myself (happily), thinking I must have piled some on (it really must be all the daily homecooked food post-Nat), mostly straight to tummyland!

Yes, my weight did increase, but I’m still underweight leh!

  • Another try at Salmon

Last night, I realised with a start, that I forgot about my cardiopilates class!

And I only realised it, way past the class timing. Tsktsk.

Well, in my defence, the week has been all about rushing home to see Nat after work. Nothing else matters. Not even FJ Benjamin or Pedder Red sale.

Ok, I did pop to Pedder Red during lunchtime on Friday and the only pair I like was going at 40% discount but they do not have it in my size anymore. I am still thinking about that pair!

Anyway…I really need to boost my braincells brainhealth. I need to add more fish to my diet. Mmmm, more sashimi. And more ways to cook salmon!

So when I saw this Roasted Salmon with a Lemon-Herb Matzo Crust via Socks’ blog, I was really tempted to try. And I did. I used Meiji crackers instead of Matzo.

It was yummy! I really liked the strong taste of mustard – strangely, cos I never really liked it at all before. I also tried a ham & mushroom carbonara pasta (from the Sauce book) which turned out looking like Hokkien Mee and somehow lacking a certain oomph (meaning, not so tasty la).

What did I do wrong? Did I miss anything?

Thankfully, the strong tasting salmon was able to complement it.

Now I have a whole bottle of wholegrain mustard. Time to scour for more recipes using that!

  • Not me, it’s him

Another sign that my cheeky boy is almost back to his self…

I was feeding him and Kaizer bread last night. As I packed the bread away, Nat tugged at my dress, and pointed at the bread.

mummysnooze :: You want some more?

    Nat :: *shakes head*

Mummy snooze :: Then who wants some more?

    Nat :: *points at Kaizer*

    Hahahaha.

  • I rather it be me, not him

It started with Nat vomitting after milk and a fever on Sunday night. The paed diagnosed it as viral gastric flu (man, this hit babies toddlers too?), there is no need for antibiotics and that it will likely last for about a week.

In other words, ride it out.

We’ve been really blessed so far with a relatively illness-free boy, and this is by far the worse we have been hit. He was visibly less playful. His appetite is affected. And he is more manja, especially sticking more to me. Only mummy will do.

It must be the norm for children. My mum said I was like that too. Hee.

When I had to go back to work after two days, it broke my heart to see him crying and wanting me to carry. (Usually he will  wave and kiss bye-bye and close the door on us!). And this is where our parents step in, taking turns to come by to watch over him.

Holding his hot body to me makes me wanna cry. And wish that it was me, not him, who was sick.

There was no bedtime fuss, mostly due to lethargy from being ill but it was not easy to stay asleep through the night. He will wake ever so often, mostly from discomfort and fall back to sleep with a whimper. Breaks my heart so.

Never mind the interrupted sleep. All tiredness were forgotten. I only want him to get better, I pray.

It is an understatement to say that we were worried, especially when his fever hits a high of 39.3 degC at night. After watching too many drama serials, my still-imaginative-at-2am-mind was frantically wondering if high fever will cause any damage…

Still, we count our blessings – at least he is not averse to medication. In fact, he loves them and even ask for second-helping!

When he was playing with the DVDs in the lounge last night, we knew – our boy is almost back!

It is day 4 today and it seems we are on the road to recovery. The twinkle in his eyes (which I miss!) is almost back. :)

Perhaps it is ironic that I am reading The elephant in the playroom, a compilation of stories written by parents of special needs children. What I am going through is so minute in comparison to their challenges and emotional upheaval. Such strength and much love. It was encouraging and humbling, at the same time.

  • My Strength comes from Him

Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him. ~ John 14:12

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.Honour your father and mother— which is the first commandment with a promise— that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.
Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. ~ Ephesians 6:1-4
