This Blessed Life

The days of dance

Interesting that babysis got into ACJC, like me and actually, every other cousin in the family.

And even more interesting that she joined Dance as ECA. I laughed (or grimaced!) that I was from the pioneer batch. The days when Dance was definitely not as happening an ECA as it is now, it seems.

Back then, we only performed during school concerts (like CNY, Teachers Day when half the school usually ‘pontanged” and the other half were forced to sit through it…huhhuhhuh). I think we had a Dance concert of sorts, and it was themed L’Passion or something like this, according to my fuzzy memories. I remembered those days of leotards and tees, practicing weekday and Saturday mornings in the then spanking new dance studio when the swimming complex was opened. Full length mirror for us, instead of practicing in the hall.

Well, I definitely can’t do a (almost) split or those backward bend anymore!

Flashback to today, the dance team seemed to be really popular. For one thing, there are definitely more guys! HAH!

Anyway, on Friday, it was the dance concert and the whole family trooped down in support, on its opening night. My dad was joking that he’s got to be the oldest parent around. ;) As for me, it was really flashback being back in school…

It was nat’s first dance concert too and though I was hoping he would do something embarrassing like call out “YI YI!” loudly when he spotted babysis, he did nothing of that sort. He didn’t fidget either. He paid rapt attention and was really enthralled and entertained by the movement on stage.

We all had a bit of a problem trying to spot babysis – they all look alike – tall & slim with makeup on…it takes a mother, aka my mum, to recognise your own daughter. Haha.

I bought a bouquet and had wanted nat to go on-stage to present to babysis. Alas, no such chance.

  • Sleep counting

As we sat around the table and told my dad of his grandson bedtime tactics and us having to count to 100 and back (which tehpeng had to do that last night, although we thought Nat was all tired out from an evening of play and fun catching the Chingay floats with silver_crv & family), he recounted that I was good – I was asleep by the time he counted to 20.

    WAHAHAHAH! 不亏是Little Snooze! ;)

Actually, when tehpeng took over the countdown to sleep duty last night, I was out by the time he counted past 5. Wahahahaha.

    At 80

We celebrated my maternal grandma’s 80th birthday over the weekend.

I would think at this age, nothing makes you happier than to see your children, grandchildren and great grandson (Nat!) all together. And we had the bestest ever cake – durian! It was soooo rich & thick in durian (the real thing, no less!).

She took care of me when I was young and I remembered I really enjoyed my stay-overs during the school holidays even till I was much older in primary school. Because I would have fun helping out at her chee cheong fun stall (thus why I still love this for brekkie) and then she will bring me to buy toys.

Aaaah, such precious memories. Hazy memories. And so I really want to find pictures of her stall at the Old Kallang Airport hawker centre…most of the pictures were taken at home. I guess back then, no one took photos at your ‘workplace’…a place where you make a living.

  • Of boys and toys

And so it’s the last night before tehpeng is home. The first night was abit hard and suddenly the king-sized bed is too empty. Subsequent nights, I was so zonked by work that I was out flat the moment I hit the pillow. Zzzzz.

Though I must say he’s got the short end of the bargain, even if he is overseas and all, as I have Nat with me. :)

It is strange (and inconvenient..haha) not having him at home. I erm, don’t really know how to work all the remote controls…

When PJ & DC came over with dc-boy last night, I was really quite glad for their company. Nat was tugging at DC a good part of the night to play ball. Guess mummy is not really a ball-person huh.

And I even managed to turn on the BR player for the Jacky Cheung concert. When I very proudly told tehpeng this…

tehpeng :: You know how to turn on? Don’t spoil the player hoh.

And DC-dad speaketh the hdbr-langugage that will surely get tehpeng excited. If only he was around. Surely more of such sessions must be planned.

Anyway, the star of the night is dc-boy. *yawns*…adult convo on how much milk he’s having and his sleep times etc must be boring.

PJ is one of my 3BFFs whom I’ve known since yonks ago. We go way back to those days when we were in our blue uniform, commuting to school and back together and definitely not knowing that our lives will turn out this way. I mean, we have our own next-gen!

So it was really quite surreal with her cradling dc-boy and nat up to some slight mischief of taking his dvds out of the boxes while seated next to me, and us reminiscing about those cantopop concerts we went for.

Can’t wait to see our boys play together.

  • She shared with me the good news

I’ve always had tutors since primary school. Guess that’s my mum’s way of assuring that I do my homework and have someone I can go to for help. I remember my tutors during the primary school days the most.  The sessions were fun and I never dreaded them.

Teacher S, my first ever tutor, had the most amazing library of Enid Blyton books.  She will lend me the books to read, thus starting my love for reading. I can’t recall why she stopped tutoring me and another tutor SK came along. She was a Uni-grad (I think?) and was really gentle and soft (compared to S who exhibits motherly-discipline, u know what I mean?).

I remember her drilling me with the Blue book (you know, the one with the synonyms and whatnot at the back pages…Abbatoir,a place where they slaughter animals etc?? Does it bring back memories?). I remember her teaching me algebra which wasn’t in Pri 6 syllabus at that time and how I managed to use it to solve problem sums during PSLE paper. Huh huh. (Sadly, my maths-brains seem to disintegrate through the years…)

But I remember her most as the one who told me the good news, about Jesus, using this little yellow booklet. I remember it was my PSLE year and admittedly, the thought of having a God to pray to was comforting to me. Hahah. So I prayed the sinners’ prayer. I then happily told  my mum “I’m now a Christian!” and her reply was – ok, u go to church with friends when you are Sec 1 (cos at pri 6, in my times, we weren’t allowed to go out with friends).

Since then, my faith was a journey in itself. There were times I backslided, but God was always there. I was baptized in 2001 and I’m still walking on this faith journey and witnessing God’s blessings in my life. But I always remember SK as the one who first guided me on this journey.

Just last week, my mum met SK’s brother who somehow recognised her (which goes to show my mum didn’t age much since then..huhhuh!). I don’t know how, cos I don’t think we’ve ever met her family before though we do stay in the same neighbourhood back then. He asked if she has a daughter who used to have a tutor called SK. He then told her that SK has sinced passed on.

When my mum recounted this to me last night, all these thoughts & memories came to my mind.

Last night, I gave thanks to God for SK – She was the angel God put in my life to share with me the good news. She has blessed me, not only academically at that time, but so much more by sharing with me about Jesus.

I can only pray that I will be a blessing to others as well.

  • Riding the circle

It was an impromptu decision. Last night, I was intending to just head to the library, drop off the books (due yesterday), borrow books, get some groceries and head home.

All these after dinner at tehparents. Who to know tehpeng suggested adding a Circle Line ride to the list.

I love spontaneity and I’m glad even with Nat in tow, we have no qualms doing so.

Even if Nat was wearing singlet and shorts (this mummy wonders if he will be cold & that these are wear-at-home clothes, not go-out clothes…haha!) and we have no diapers and not even our EZ-link cards with us.

We enjoyed the (joy)ride. I took the Circle Line just earlier to get home for the first time but it was more fun to share the experience with tehpeng and Nat.

How far we’ve come since the days of MRT’s first ride in 1987. I remembered my first MRT joyride. Do you?

    A night of hopping

When we arrived, we realised Indoor was about 70% decked in red. Hmmm, there must be a dress code which I didn’t know of!

Well, I was in salmon pink, close enough ;)

Admittedly, I was both skeptical and tickled about the concert. I was no longer the teenybopper and I’ve really lost touch with Cantopop. But as the lights dimmed and the trio came on-stage in their extravagant costumes and flamboyant teasing with the crowd and of course, belting out their hits, both the dance hits and the ballads, I found myself singing along & screaming together with everyone else. Haha. Yes I did.

I like the whole arrangement of the concert, the medley of their songs and especially the tribute segment to Anita Mui & Leslie Cheung. Wah, I really grew up with their songs!

They turned Indoor into Sparks for the night. As with all their concerts (the last being in ‘94, I think?), they managed to get almost everyone on their feet. Even a pregnant fan was standing & swaying along lor.

They still have it in them. Apparently, next year is their 25th year in showbiz & they will have a concert too.

lilsnooze :: Let’s catch them in HK!!
