I don’t quite fancy char siew. And I am trying to cook/eat less pork but somehow, charsiew came to my mind last week and I googled around for recipes. I know my mum used to make them with her AMC pot, but I wanted to try using the oven.
Seeing that this used strawberry essence, I was intrigued and wanted to try it out.
Much to tehpeng’s disbelief – Strawberry!?
I improvised and used real strawberries instead (mashed them up), oyster sauce, real garlic, dark & light sauce and honey for the marinade. Left the meat (shoulder butt and I purposely chose the one with a tad more fats..heehee) overnight and grilled the meat, after church.
TADA! My homemade char siew!
Doesn’t look like those sold outside, but it tasted good and became our light snack before we went for a walk at the Henderson Waves.
I suppose I should add more strawberries the next time.

oooh looks good! i wanna try making this too! i make char siew with AMC pot and my hk friend also thought me to make char siew with the oven. all of them don’t look like those sold outside, cos we don’t use the colouring. i prefer it this way. besides i never rarely eat char siew outside, i prefer home made ones. i definitely wanna try this with strawberry!

ming :: Im in this “use more natural ingredients/less salt” phase now. And the marinade was really easy!
D :: I think the meat was softer and juicier using the AMC pot.
Selvia :: I bought shoulder butt, from NTUC. It’s clearly labelled (so helpful for non market goers like me!). Else, you can ask for “wu hua rou” at market.
muffingirl :: That is, if my cooking-phase still continues!

For my case, have not found any store that would satisfy my char siew gian, as most of them either look good but taste bad or look bad and taste bad… Have not found any that is look good and taste good, or look ok, taste good!!
